For individuals experiencing psychosis for the first time, the sudden nature of the first episode can not only be jarring, but downright scary as well. That’s where Wyandot Center’s Early Intervention Team (EIT) steps in to help support and manage those early experiences.

“People can live really happy, fulfilling lives while still hearing voices and experiencing delusions,” says Jordan Graves, EIT Therapist. “It’s just the fear and confusion that disrupts their lives. It takes you a really long time to make sense of what’s going on when things change so fast. That’s what makes early intervention so important.”

Across the country, there has been much discussion about who should respond to mental health crises that are reported to 911: social workers or police officers. At the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department, officers have been working alongside a social worker for the past seven years. Even though the program has been around for a while, there are many community members who don’t know this partnership exists.

The concept of peer support has been around for decades. We’ve all heard of Alcoholics Anonymous: a group of people with a common struggle, together with a list of steps to guide them in a new direction. It’s become an icon of our society’s approach to combatting alcoholism outside of a professional setting.

Fundamentally, this is peer support.
